Conditions were dry but very cold this was our 2nd game having played a challenge the previous week. Roscommon Gaels settled well with Chloe Donohue dominating midfield. Hollie Harkin, Claire McNeill, Ellen Beisty and Ellen Tully impressing in their respective positions. We were playing with the wind advantage in the first half. The girls had a lot of possession but were struggling to hit the target. Eva Mulry, Isabelle Stephen’s and Zara Fallon were unlucky on a couple of occasions. Oran applied a lot of pressure in the second half but the girls held out well with Bebhinn Hoare, Eadaoin Walsh and Caoimhe Walsh proving strong in defence. It was a good win for our team. Final score Roscommon Gaels 2-01 to Oran 1-01. Round 2 of the Feile Championship we have a bye. Round 3 we play Dominic’s the 30th of March at 5pm in Lisnamult. It's been a busy few weeks for the U-14 hurlers. We lost to Four Roads and beat Oran in the league stages of the county Feile competition. This morning we played Tooreen in an enjoyable and worthwhile challenge match in Lisnamult with Tooreen coming out on top. We play Athleague/Tremane next Saturday in the next round of the county Feile. Senior Hurlers are out on Saturday 31st of March in Group B when they play Padraig Pearses at 5.30pm in Lisnamult. Feile It's an exciting season ahead as this year, Feile known as Feile Na nGael is being hosted in Connaught. We are delighted to be one of the hosting clubs; it is a great honour to be able to do so. Close on 60 hurling clubs from the province and 12 more from Westmeath and Longford will be involved. There will also be close on 50 camogie clubs from the province hosting camogie clubs from all over Ireland. The dates for Feile na nGael 2018 are June 8th/9th and 10th. There will be group games on Friday evening and Saturday morning when the host team plays the visiting team. On Saturday afternoon the cup and shield quarter finals will be played. This all leads to the semi finals and finals of the cup and shield competitions in all divisions which will be played primarily at the Connacht GAA centre on the Sunday morning to evening. As part of our participation in Féile Na nGael 2018 our club is expected to provide host accommodation for a visiting team. This means that we will need to organise places to stay for players and at least three mentors. For any further queries on the Feile weekend please contact Tom O’Farrell on 083 1198389 this is going to be an amazing week end for our club. Below pictured are the Roscommon Gaels hurling and comogie Feile teams. Is your hurley the correct size? Grip, size and weight of Hurley. Length and weight of Hurley have a tremendous effect on the user. The traditional method of gauging the length of the Hurley by matching it to a player's hip has proved inaccurate and unsuitable. Two players of the same height can have a difference of 4 or 10 centimetres in hip height. Children and beginners are inclined to go for a longer Hurley, the perception being that - the longer the Hurley the longer the puck. The truth is quite the opposite - long Hurley’s equals no puck. Correct length and weight are more important than previously thought. Top players are now using Hurley’s 3 inches shorter than their counterparts of the 1960s and 1970s. This year Stephen Lucey, the 6ft 2 in full back from Limerick changed from a 36" Hurley to a 34" Hurley as he felt that he could quicken his stroke with the shorter Hurley. Time and space are very much reduced, tackling skills are improved; opportunities are lost in a split second if the Hurley is not completely manoeuvrable. The game is faster; there are less man to man contests of strength. The Hurley that suited those clashes has no bearing on today's game. Young children's wrists and arms are light and fragile. They can only use Hurley’s that are light and short. To assess the correct length, a child should stand straight, hands by side, shoulders square, place the Hurley (bas on the ground) by child's side, grasp the Hurley in the dominant hand, the distance from tip of bas to child's hand position is the correct length for that child. If the child can use the Hurley like a sword with one hand, it is about the right weight. It is agreed now that most of the trouble with the unorthodox grip comes from starting with Hurley’s that are too long and too heavy. Approximately 87% of the population are dominant right with only one per thousand having equal dominance. A player's development will be severely impeded if he/she starts with non-dominant hand on top. Some respected coaches say there is up to 50% loss in potential. Starting players correctly then is of utmost importance to the player's development and enjoyment as well as a club's ability to raise playing standards. Changing a player's grip is difficult for player and coach but where both parties are willing it is certainly possible and very rewarding. Babs Keating and John Fenton, both supreme stylists and legends of the game, changed from unorthodox to orthodox grip. Left-handed or cíotóg players need good models and sensitive coaches because they are the minority. A coach should learn how to demonstrate left-handed for the two or three players in every panel e.g. JJ Delaney (Kilkenny), Paul Kelly (Tipperary) and Jerry Quinn (Clare). Nowadays every player will write with their dominant hand, this is nearly the only safe way of determining hand dominance. Very small Hurley’s used in a one-handed game with light air balls will help guarantee dominant hand on top. Change: • It takes 3 weeks to change an old habit. • It takes 3 more weeks to learn the new skill. • It takes 3 further weeks for the new skill to become a habit. • It would take 9 weeks for the player to experience the full advantage of changing. • 9 weeks seems forever to a child but in overall career, it's a small price to pay for year of enjoyment. ![]() LGFA U12 Football is back in full swing with great numbers in attendance training is Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm to approx 7.30pm in Lisnamult a text will go out. The communication on the field by our players shows how close this group of lads have become. Elphin scored 2 points two minutes in, our lads responded by two nice scores coming from Kieran Kilcline in the 2nd and 4th minute. We picked our scores off early in the first half with the lads taking their own shots when in the right place. Cian Connolly scored the first goal in the 20th minute. The score line at halftime was Roscommon Gaels 1-5 Elphin 0-3. Our lads settled back into the 2nd half and were using their spaces. A goal from Kieran Kilcline in the 42nd minute and a goal from Peter Gilooly in the 53rd minute pushed our lads well ahead. We won on a score line of 3-0- to 0-07. With a great performance from our lads throughout. Kieran Kilcline 1-02, Cian Connolly 1-01, John McHale 0-01, Tim Lamb 0-01, Cillian Egan 0-01, Paul Allen 0-01, Paul Gleeson 0-01, Peter Gilooly 1-00, Richard Hughes 0-01. Well done to our U17 hurling Roscommon Gaels 6-21 Ath/Tremane 1-03 well done lad’s great performance. There is a bit of debate on the final score Pat Clancy is telling me 6-21 and John Walker is saying 5-18 to 1-3 either way a win is a win. I am awaiting the score to go up on the GAA Website and we will see who is paying attention!!! Well done to Roscommon Hurling today against Warwickshire they are now through to a National Final. Our first game of the league was to be a home game on Sunday 25th of March against Faithleach’s but we have been informed that they are not going to be fielding an U12 team this year. U14 Football training continues Tuesday evenings in Full Body Workhouse at 8.15pm €5 this is a combined training of both footballers and camogie players. U16’s were out against Strokestown on Saturday evening. We just about had a panel of 15 girls. The first half the girls were leading. Nessa Madden is consistent in her full back position made some great breaks through the forwards, Sioda McGuinness goal saving showed what a great head she has at reading the ball. Eva Beisty impressed and showed why she is on the county u16 panel to name but a few from this panel of girls. This team like the juniors put far too many wide and should have narrowed the margin in the second half. Final score Roscommon Gaels 0-4 Strokestown 2-3. Junior Ladies Football Tuesday evenings 8.15pm in the Hyde and Sunday Mornings 11am. We went outdoor for the first time since we started on Tuesday evening great to see so many turning up. We had our first game of the League today against St. Croans. The girls put on a great display of football and showed great team spirit from start to finish. This amazing bunch of girls has come so far in such a short space of time. We missed a lot of goal chances and put far too many wide but at least we know what we need to be working on. The score did not reflect the game. Final score St Croans 7-6 Roscommon Gaels 1-3. Training continues Tuesday evening 8.15pm in the Hyde. A huge welcome back to Bernie Ryan and Sarah Sharkey. Or junior team Football
