Last Saturday 22nd of September, saw what we thought would be the end to the U12’s 2018 season with a home game advantage against Dominic’s in the County A Final. Excitement was in the air as we began the game with a peach of a goal from Shauna Walsh and soon after a superb point from Martha McSharry. Dominic’s got back into the game to leave a score of Roscommon Gaels 1-01 St Dominics 1-02 at half time. The Gaels were not long levelling up from a Siofra Hession free in the second half. Each and every member of the panel fought their little hearts out for the Amber and Purple jersey. With 5 minutes to go and 4 points down a cracker of a goal from Siofra Hession left one point between the two teams. The game continued to be a battle before Siofra Hession pointed a free to earn us a draw in what was a cracker of a game. Our girls must be admired for their hard work as they fought hard for every ball in a tough battle. It was with all this determination that got them the well deserved draw. A huge thank you Flemming’s Super Valu who provided socks to the panel, which they were thrilled with. We would also like to thank everyone who came out and supported the girls. The replay will take place next Saturday date and time to be confirmed and as always support is welcome for this great bunch of girls. LGFA U14 Football: The Div 1 final was set for Sunday 23rd in Lisnamult, against the favourites Brigid’s. We began brightly; dominating possession, Brigid’s then found their rhythm, and with the aid of three fortunate goals were well ahead at half time. In the Second half Brigid’s didn’t score for 23 mins and our girls held possession but were unlucky in converting scores. However we doubters began to turn into believers after several great scores from us saw the whole complexion of the game change to a two point deficit. We attacked from everywhere, Brigids, we sensed, were getting very anxious. But the comeback ran out of time and Brigids ploughed on and won by 10 points at the final whistle. We were all immediately devastated but this disappeared over time when we realised just how much we had achieved during the year. To get to a Division 1 County Final after winning a Div 3A Final last year was beyond all our expectations. The management would like to thank all the players for their effort commitment and energy throughout the year and the many sponsors along the way. 2019 is just around the corner and we have no doubt that this team will continue to represent themselves and Roscommon Gaels with pride and distinction. Pictured are the U14 Football team with their news tops kindly sponsored by Tommy O’Connor. Thank You A huge thank you to O’Connor Waste Management Ltd who sponsored a set of training tops for our Under-14 girls team. Hurling U10 Hurling: Our U10 hurlers participated in the Frank Young Tournament, hosted by Southern Gaels, in Athlone Friday evening last. Our U9 team played in a Challenge match against Southern Gaels at the same venue. Both the tournament & challenge ensured maximum game time for all our hurlers, with participationbeing a key goal of the U10 management teams goals this year. Our U9 team performed strongly in a 40 minute match and we were delighted with their performance. All players received medals and treats after the game. Our U10 team entered the Frank Young Tournament, facing opponents including Craughwell-Galway / Southern Gaels-Westmeath / Fr. Daltons-Westmeath. During our first group game, we faced Craughwell who were very strong, dominating possession and scoring some fantastic scores throughout. We regrouped for our second game against Southern Gaels and came out on top. Our final game, for a place in the Cup Final was against Fr Daltons. Our players stuck to the task in hand and performed strongly to take the 3rd game. Due to our strong performances in our group games, we were drawn against the strong Craughwell team in the Cup Final. Our lads, comprising of all U10s and a number of U9's started strongly and dominated proceedings in the first half. The performance of the season. At half time we lead by the smallest of margins. In the second half, Craughwell took some good scores and came out on top in the end. It was a fantastic game to witness. Our hurlers were fantastic and there is no shame in coming out second best to a team like Craughwell. The turn around from the first game was enjoyable for all involved. Well done all! Special thanks to parents who have continued to support the development of our young hurlers in the club by committing to travel to these games. It is very important that we continue to play as many games as possible to continue the strong progress these committed bunch of lads have made all season. Next up........ Thanks to everyone who bought and sold tickets your support is very much appreciated. Go raibh míle maith agat! A huge thank you to all our club members for making today such a success in Lisnamult, despite the result. There were a lot of preparations in the week running up to the match and many people worked hard to have to place looking as well as it did today. The grounds, the PA system, the scoreboard, the car parking, the traffic management, the shops, the press area and all the toilet & changing facilities made the whole experience for those who attended the game a thoroughly enjoyable one. Well done and thank you to all our volunteers and helpers who willingly gave their time to assist in the many duties that were required to ensure the smooth running of today’s match which was the biggest event that we have had this summer since Feile. Also Roscommon Gaels would like thank to those who donated their time and equipment etc. to make the day run as well as it did. Thanks to Decie Walsh for his PA equipment, to Denis Smyth LTB for his truck and to Lisnamult Residents Association for the use of their car park. On behalf of the entire Roscommon Gaels players and management I would like to offer our sincere appreciation and thanks to every single supporter who came to the match today. Thank you for putting on your Gaels Jersey and coming to games to support us. We have club facilities to be very proud of and we have a club with so many people willing to give their time both on and off the pitch to progress this club. Well done to everyone involved. Despite the disappointment of the loss it is not all over in the championship as we have a quarter final meeting with Padraig Pearses next weekend and there are quite a number of our brilliant underage teams, both boys and girls out over the next couple of weeks in a myriad of Co. Finals. Watch out for the texts and messages for these big games over the coming days and come out and support them. Well done to all for the mammoth amount of work that is being done on both on and off the fields. Roscommon Gaels abú COACHING NEWS (WK 38 2018) A. Never let a negative image or thought be your last image or thought before you kick/puck. You will probably get what you mentally ask for, so don’t ask for the negative, Ask for Success. D. Our Club Coaches – 2018 Camogie U12 Camogie: Roscommon Gaels U12 camogie fielded two teams this year the Hawks and the Eagles. The finals take place next Saturday Sept 22nd in LIsnamult starting at 10.30am. The A Final sees Roscommon Gaels Eagles face St. Domnics in what promises to be a cracker of a game. The Eagles team has gone from strength to strength this year especially after their involvement in Feile and reaching the A final is a major success for this team and camogie. After a busy season there is a play off for places in the B final and Roscommon Gaels Hawks will have their play off this Thursday evening for a place in the B Final. Again this team have improved significantly throughout the season and will make a great team for next year's season at U12 level again. We play Four Roads in the County U16 Hurling semi final next Saturday. LGFA U8 and U10 Football: We had our final training for this season last Wednesday Evening. We began training back on 25th of April and ran for 21 weeks over the course of the summer. The U10’s played 10 matches in total and the U8’s played 5 games, both teams showed great improvement over the course of the summer. A huge mention of appreciation to the coaches, mentors and parents who willingly gave their time to the teams! The U10’s and U8’s are an exceptional group of girls. Every time they go out they represent their club to the best of their ability. They have up-skilled immensely. We as coaches are very proud of this group and of what they have achieved this year. Even though we have finished for the season we would encourage the girls to practice as much as they can at home. U14 Football: Earlier in the week we hosted the U14 Summer League. In the A Final Roscommon Gaels v Oran unfortunately this game didn’t go ahead. In the B Final St Croan’s defeated Castlrea. In the C Final Four Roads defeated St Ciaran’s and in the D Final Kilbride defeated St Michael’s. A special thanks to all involved in the organising of this event and a special word of thanks to Sinead Kenny captain of the Roscommon Intermediate Team for presenting the winning teams with their plaques and medals. With a Division 1A County final fast approaching what better than to take a day out from familiarity and have a bonding day for team and mentors. That’s exactly what our U14 girls and mentors did on Saturday and what a day we had! We started off by meeting in the morning to alight onto the marvellous Club Rossie Bus to transport us for the day – the girls racing for the back and the mentors happy to sit up front and ponder about all the discussions that took place at the table a couple of seats from the front! Our driver for the day was Jimmy Reilly who refereed manys a match and Jimmy drove us safely and didn’t rush us at all. We arrived at Lough Key Forest Park and spent the morning exploring the nature and the trees – more so we were zipping mid air from one tree to another!! The mentors participated with the unsteady logs 30 odd meters off the ground providing to be a bit of a challenge for some.....!!!!Some Fun!!!!! We then enjoyed our packed lunches together, a couple of photos and then hopped on the bus again and headed for Shannon Gaels training grounds at the Bull Field in Carrick on Shannon. Encouraging words from Bernie & Yvonne and Captain Holly were delivered as the girls togged out. Inspiration taken from these words we hope along with the girls observing photos of cups and trophies won by Shannon Gaels Ladies over the years adorned the dressing room walls. After their warm up Ladies Intermediate Team Manager Michael Finneran and team Captain Sinead Kenny arrived and put the girls through their paces with an excellent training session – mentors grabbing a few tips along the way! More words of encouragement from Paul, Sean and David before togging in and back on to the bus once more. A short journey across the road to Supermacs for a well earned bite to eat! Old rivals Shannon Gaels arrived in a short time later and pleasantries and well wished were exchanged for next week end. On the way home a birthday cake with candles was brought down the back for birthday girls Megan, Chloe and Gwen. Everyone sang and cheered for the girls as they blew out their candles together. A slice of cake for everyone and a team sing song on the way home. The day of course just didn’t happen out of the blue and took a lot of planning sponsorship and contributions were made which will be acknowledged later. What an absolutely fantastic day and thanks to all those that made it happen. Everyone got involved in the activities and were on an equal lever, definitely flourishing relationships while doing something fun and engaging. The most important part of the team building day is in the name itself – the team! And what a team. We would like to wish the girls the best of luck in the Div 1 A final next Sunday 23rd in Lisnamult at 4.30pm. Please come out and support the girls. Football U8 Football: Roscommon Gaels Hosted our home Under 8 Football GAA Go Games Blitz on this Sunday the 9th. Visiting we had Oran GAA, St. Brigids, St. Dominics, Clann Na nGael. With over 100 children involved it proved to be a very busy morning and the weather even played its part in making it a very enjoyable few hours. On the day all the children played three rounds of games all of which were very competitive with some very fine skills on show. Many thanks to all who came along to make this day a great day for our young players. Thanks to all the parents, coaches, visiting clubs and referees who helped out on the day. Referees on the day (Picture enclosed): Names L-R: Jack Donnellan, Feidhlim O'Sullivan, Dara Hughes, Aaron Shannon. Finn Killion. U12 Football: Our U12 Div 1 boy’s football team had a good win yesterday at lunchtime in Lisnamult over Western Gaels and now face Shannon Gaels in our last group match on Wednesday night, also in Lisnamult. Directly afterwards our Div 5 went down by a couple of scores after a spirited performance also vs. Western Gaels. This side has one group match left versus St.Michaels which has still to be fixed. U14 Football: Our Div 1 lads dug deep to gain victory against Strokestown on Friday evening last in Lisnamult. We are now through to the County Final vs. Boyle scheduled for Sunday 23rd Sept. Venue: TBC. Our Reserve lads are through to a KO game against St Dominic’s. Date & Venue: TBC. Minor Football: The minor footballers defeated Elphin/Ballinameen in the final round of the championship on Thursday night in Lisnamult. The final scoreline was 3-13 to 2-10. Playing against the wind in the first half the Gaels were slow to settle and Elphin/Ballinameen looked the better team. However the Gaels improved as the half progressed and led by 1 point at half time. The second half saw both teams play some fine football and we eventually ran out winners by 6 points. We have now qualified for the final. This is a great achievement by the lads and is a fitting reward for all their hard work Senior Football: Our Tommy Connolly Sponsored Senior Team played their last round of the championship today on a Sunny autumnal day in Lisnamult. It was always going to be a match of two halves with each team having the benefit of a strong wind. The Gaels played against the wind in the first half and within 21 mins the sides were level. However slowly and methodically our lads worked their way back picking of some well taken scores closing the gap to Roscommon Gaels 0-4 St Brigid’s 0-9 at half time. Facing into the second half the Gaels looked forward to the assistance of the strong wind in their backs. A goal for Brigid’s 9 minutes in was a real booster to our visitors this proved costly in the final analysis. This really fired up the match with both sides playing some great football. However, despite winning much possession and scoring 6 points in the second half we were scoreless for 21 mins in the second half. We got turned over at crucial times with inaccurate passing and wayward kicks. We didn’t press up on the short options on Brigid’s kick out. Final Score Roscommon Gaels 0-10 Brigid’s 1-12. Our lads now go on to meet Pearses in the quarter finals next week. Hurling U10 Hurling: Our U10 hurlers played Ballygar GAA in a challenge match Thursday evening last in Ballygar. We fielded 2 teams, competing in 4 games, against 2 Ballygar teams. Both of our U10 teams performed strongly throughout all games and it was fantastic to see the boys demonstration of skills including jab lifts, striking from the hands, sidelines, solo runs, free-taking, points & goal scoring and support play for team mates throughout. While the second games were marred by strong showers, all players stuck to their task demonstrating great resolve, determination and focus during difficult games. Both teams won their games and were delighted with their own performances, as were coaches and parents alike. Well done all! Next up...... we have been invited to partake in an U10 tournament & challenge in Southern Gaels Athlone Friday evening, Sept 21st. Time to be confirmed. This is the last tournament / challenge of the year and we encourage all players to attend. More details to follow during the week. We will wrap up the season in Lisnamult at the end of September. Training continues Monday in Lisnamult @ 6:30pm U12 Hurling: Ros Gaels played St. Mary's Carrick on Shannon in the u12 B semi country final. Lisnamult caretaking and grounds maintenance We don’t have a caretaking team but do have a parks committee in place whose duties include cutting & lining our pitches and general maintenance surrounding our pitches. If a pitch needs attention the parks committee (via Philip Mullen) should be contacted immediately and attention brought to the problem area. We will also arrange to have the bins removed for collection but should you notice an over-flowing bin, please report this. Use of Lisnamult playing facilities * All bookings for training, matches blitzes, sports wall etc must be done through pitch coordinator - Philip Mullen with exact dates and times * Competition matches take precedence over training and challenge matches for all pitches * Put out and take in flags yourself – they are stored in the physio room * All gates from all pitches to be closed when leaving the field and car parks * No warm ups on main pitch * AED/defibrillator is in a metal box at the side of the dressing rooms. There is no code for the box and if it will not open please press 0 on keypad to open it. Stretcher (orange) is in the kitchen behind the door and the Eircode for Lisnamult is on a sign at the side of the dressing rooms. Use of the dressing rooms * New dressing room kitchen key is in a key safe at front of building code 1959 * The keys for ref room, dressing rooms, public toilets and internal doors are labelled and hanging in a small cupboard on the right of the kitchen. Please use and return to this cupboard when finished with. Then lock the kitchen and return the key to the key safe and jumble up the code. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL KEYS ARE RETURNED TO THEIR PROPER PLACE BEFORE LEAVING ESPECIALLY THE KITCHEN KEY. * Players must be supervised while using the dressing rooms before, during and after games or training; team officials are responsible for the safety of their players during this time * It is suggested that dressing room doors are locked during matches to prevent access and for security of belongings. Visiting teams should place key in door when leaving * Dressing rooms are to be cleaned by players / mentors who use them including the visiting teams. If the dressing rooms are left untidy by the visiting team(s) then the Gaels team who was involved in the fixture/blitz must clean them before departure and lock up. Suggestion is to get team captain on older teams to pick a few players to ensure the rooms are cleaned and left clear of clothes etc * Responsibility for the return of keys to the cupboard for the rooms used is the host Gaels team. The final building locks up and key check should be done by the last Gaels team leaving the building. * Do not remove keys from Lisnamult and keys for toilets etc should be left in kitchen when a few groups are using the facilities. Kitman Shane Hoare – a man for all seasons and ‘part of the furniture’ Players and managers come and go. But when you think of Roscommon Gaels senior footballers, there is one man who has outlasted them all – kitman Shane Hoare. The Roscommon man has been there through good times and bad, every training session, every match. No job too big or too small. The work Shane has done with Roscommon Gaels is unparalleled. He is part of the furniture at Lisnamult and will always remain so. The last thing to say is that good furniture if held onto long enough gains value and Shane is no different. “He wins and loses with all of us. He enjoys the wins like we do and takes the losses as bad as we do too.
He is an integral part of the Roscommon Gaels senior football team and we are very lucky to have him. Sum of Money Found A sum of money was found in The Hyde Centre last Sunday Evening. The lads were presented with jerseys kindly sponsored by DNA logistics (thanks Deirdre)which hopefully will be the first of many Gaels jerseys to be worn by these young footballers for years to come. On behalf of the coaches we would to thank all involved throughout the year on making it what we hoped was a successful introduction to Roscommon Gaels and the GAA while keeping it a fun environment for the lads. After discussion with the u8 management we would like to invite all lads born in 2012 to u8 training on Saturday the 15th of September in lismamult at 10am.The aim is to introduce the nursery group to an u8 environment for the final 4/5 u 8 training sessions. U12 Football: Our U12's had a busy week. Last Saturday (1st) we had 38 players taking part in a tournament hosted by Corofin with teams taking part from Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Westmeath and ourselves from Roscommon. It was a great experience for the lads. Next up on Monday our Div 1 team had a good win in a great battle with Clann Na nGael. On Thursday evening the same team were out again versus St. Dominic s but on this occasion we went down to a good Dominics side. Finally today, our Div 5 side put in a good performance in overcoming St.Ronans. Next up is training on Thursday evening as usual and then both teams play their Western Gaels counterparts at lunchtime on Saturday in Lisnamult. U14 Football : Our Reserve lads performed well last Thursday evening against St Dominics narrowly losing out on a score line of 6.8 to 6.6. Our Div 1 lads play Strokestown on Friday evening next in Lisnamult (7pm) in a playoff to decide who reaches the U14 County Final. Minor Football: Our minor team drew with St. Dominics in Round 5 of the championship in Lisnamult on a score line of 1-11 to 2-8. St. Dominics were the better team in the first half and deservedly led by 5 points at half time. The Gaels were much improved in the second half and put in a great performance to secure a deserved draw. We play Elphin in Lisnamult on Thursday next. Senior Football: Our Tommy Connolly sponsored Senior team moved up to second place in the Senior Football Championship Division One table this evening, following their 8-point win over Strokestown at Faithleach’s. A Cian Connolly Penalty in the 8th-minute helped Roscommon Gaels to open up a 3-point lead (1-1 to 0-1). Within the opening Five minutes of the second-half, James O’Gara registered a goal with a neat finish to the Strokestown net. Peter Gilooly was added to the Gaels attack and was unlucky his goal didn’t click but managed to kick a score later. Mark Nally, Richard Hughes, Cathal Dinneen and Mark Healy helped Roscommon Gaels to keep in touch with well-worked points, but in addition to their contribution it was Cian Connolly who kept the scoreboard ticking away scoring 2 Points from Play 2 frees and a Penalty. After suffering defeat to Clann Na Gael early in the Championship and a draw with Boyle last week, The Gaels bounced back this evening with a morale-boosting victory over Strokestown. Final Score Roscommon Gaels 2-11 Strokestown 0-09. Roscommon Gael’s will now face last years County Champions St Brigid’s in their next scheduled championship game on Sunday September 16th. Many thanks to everyone in St Faithleach’s for their hospitality on this evening and for having the pitch in such great condition. Hurling

Motivational Quotes The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender. -- Vince Lombardi You can't make a great play unless you do it first in practice. -- Chuck Noll Never let your head hang down. Never give up and sit down and grieve. Find another way. -- Satchel Paige Things that hurt, instruct. -- Benjamin Franklin You can motivate players better with kind words than you can with a whip. -- Bud Wilkinson Coaching Tips Always plan sessions in advance. 1. Always make sure all footballs/sliotars are on the ground or in front of you when you are speaking to the group to achieve full attention. 2. Keep all instructions short and precise. No rambling, children will lose focus. 3. Use the IDEA method. (Introduce,Demonstrate,Execute,Attend). A child remembers more of what they see rather than what they hear. 4. Keep your head up and speak loud and clear to the whole group while using your body language to assert yourself. 5. Fill your sessions with encouragement. Children will learn more in a positive environment. Always find a way to compliment every child within your group. 6. If a drill is not working for you - change it!! Have the confidence to say "lets try something different". 7. Most important - HAVE FUN. If you are having fun that will always transfer to the children which will make for a great training session. Camogie U8 Camogie:Well done to our U8 camogie girls who played in a Camogie Blitz in Four Roads yesterday morning. They did so so well and arr showing great skills. Thank you to Four Roads for hosting. Training continues on Fridays. Pictured our the U8 & U10 Camogie girls U12 Camogie (Eagles):Well done to our U12 camogie girls and Sean our little mascot who defeated Tulsk earlier today. U16 camogie: We played Athleague in Lisnamult in the U16 championship. This was a very one-sided affair with the Gaels scoring a lot of goals in the first half to a single point for Athleague. Management rested our strongest players in the second half with a view to balancing out the sides. Our next game is away to Four Roads on Monday 3rdSeptember at 6.30pm. Players are asked to be at Four Roads pitch at 5.45pm please. Junior camogie: Last Tuesday on a very wet evening we played Tulsk in the Junior Camogie ‘B’ Final in Lisnamult. We started slow and unfortunately Tulsk capitalised on our early mistakes. Although it is a 15 a-side competition, Tulsk insisted that they only had 13 players and it only became apparent during the first half that Tulsk had three subs in their dugout. We went in to the dressing rooms at half time six points down and given the conditions it would have been very easy to give up and hand the game to Tulsk. We made some changes and summarised the key areas where we needed improvements and went out determined to give it everything in the second half. However, disaster struck in the first five minutes when Tulsk scored two consecutive goals leaving us with a deficit of 12 points to overcome. Our girls found themselves having to dig deep then but they found their character and fought hard to claw back the game. With only minutes to go we managed to bring the deficit back to a single point after a shot at goal skimmed over the bar. Shortly after, Colleen Kelly struck for a point to level it up but the umpire waved it wide. The puckout ended up in Tulsks’s hands and down the field they went and got the final point to win by two. There was great support from the Gaels at the match and we’d like to thank you all sincerely for coming out in the rain and for sticking with us all year. Of course the girls were disappointed but this shouldn’t be seen as a big loss since all of our players on the night with the exception of Colleen are U18 and five of the girls who played on the night are U16. We have performed well this year at this level and it has been good preparation for the minor championship which will be run off in October. LGFA U8 & U10 Football: Training continues Wednesday Evenings at 6.30pm. Goals from Ava Mulry 3, Zara Fallon 1, Penalty from Ava Mulry 1 and points from Claire McNeill 3, Chloe Donoghue 2, Ava Mulry 5 and Ali Byrne 1, Eimear O’Farrell 1 helped us to maintain our lead and secure victory.
