COACHING NEWS (WK 31 2018) 
A. Coaching Tip : From Technique to Team play 
One of the more difficult things to coach to young players is the need to modify their individual styles for the good of the team. If you have spent time ensuring that players are comfortable on the ball, it means you have worked on kicking, catching, lifting, blocking, tackling, shooting, evasion skills and solo running.

The most attractive of these skills to a young player is very often 'solo running'. The feeling the player gets when he/she can run while making a ball spin from toe to hand is tremendous. Many players want to use this technique as often as possible.

So, when you step in to coach team play and take players to another level, some see it as a denial of the right to try out this great skill of solo running.

However, it has to be done. There are no easy answers, but if you explain that you recognise their position and, at the same time, remind them that your job is to take them to higher and higher levels of play [i.e. adding more skills to their repertoire] you may find it easier to introduce.

Conditions, limits, modifications....whatever you choose to call them, must be set for players to experience the beauty of good teamwork and to learn how passing, support running and shooting can bring as good a feeling as individual solo running.

Remember.....you may only have to limit a few players at a time, rather than impose a blanket ban on all solo running. One trick is to take a team aside [e.g. in a 9v9 game] and choose two of the players from one team who must play the ball immediately. Only inform their team-mates [not the opposition] and let them respond to this for a five or ten minute spell. The roles may be rotated among the team to let all practise.

This lets you see how well two players can change their games to benefit team play and how quickly their team-mates learn to make themselves available for passes from them.

B. Coaching Tip : Progress or Regress 
For those of you, who coach our youngest Gaels; think carefully before you break for the winter. Calling time at the end of September and resuming again in March will mean for some, little or no activity for up to five months.

Granted, quite a few will fill the gap with other sports and activities, but few will hone their Gaelic football or hurling or camogie skills during the close season.

If you're lucky enough to have access to a hall or gym or leisure centre, why not devise a weekly programme for players based on developing both sides?
There is no better way to work on left and right sides than to use a rebound wall in a hall. Coaches can spend time in a confined area and with smaller numbers, checking technique through the 'Head, Hands, Feet' method and preparing children for the forthcoming outdoor season.
The secret is to identify groups of no more than 20 and to ensure that the coach to player ratio is at no more than 1:5.

What Advice to give to players about Hydration
Noticing the effects of this high heat on players the last few weeks? Other than Lots of water and fresh fruit, what other advice do you need to give players??  In a match situation all to agree water break after 15 mins.  For coaches, reduce volume and time spent training, be efficient with time a strong 40-50 mins will be more effective than a long 1 hr and 15 in this heat.  You are going to laugh frozen facecloths on the back of the neck to get the core temp down at half time! Keep players from overheating esp. in camogie hurling games? Get the helmets off as much as possible. A good biofeedback chart to use with players which forms part of the puzzle. Educate them on monitoring urine colour as a feedback tool for hydration status.

Electrolyte/sodium drink can also be homemade.
1/4 teaspoon to 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 litre bottle water
Sugar free cordial for taste.

U14 Camogie:
Hard luck to our U14 Camogie Girls who were defeated by a better Four Road’s side on Wednesday Evening in the County Final in Oran. It was a tough day for our girls, but that being said, they are a very young side who will learn a lot from their game and will take it with them going forward. They are a great bunch of girls who just came up against a better team on the day.  Final Score Roscommon Gaels 1-3 Four Roads 2-8. This is not the last you’ve seen of these girls!! Many thanks to all who have supported us all season, especially those who travelled to Oran on Wednesday. It is very very much appreciated.
Finally a massive Thank You to the Peppermill who kindly sponsored the half-zip tops for all of the players. The girls are delighted with them. 

Junior Camogie:
The final round of the Junior camogie championship took place last week and our girls travelled to Woodmount to play Padraig Pearses.  This was the battle we expected it to be as Pearses play hard and show no mercy.  We had 15 players with us and each one gave 110% in this game.  It was really nip and tuck for the first half with each side trying to exert their dominance on the game.  The half time score was 1:3 to 2:2 with the Gaels behind by just two points, our first half goal coming from Niamh McCourt.  When the second half got underway Pearses got a third goal followed by a point to increase their lead by 6 points but the character of the Gaels girls shone brightly and they never gave up.  Their second half tally was 3 goals, provided by Amy McNeill, Colleen Kelly and Ella Killion.  Ella Killion also put over 3 points from placed balls and the Gaels led the game by the minimum going into the final 5 minutes.   Unfortunately, a late goal resulting from a good run by their half forward line clinched it for Pearses.  Final score 5:5 Pearses, 4:6 the Gaels.  Overall the Gaels gave a mighty performance which now takes them into the County Roscommon Junior ‘B’ Camogie Final to be played on 11th August in Woodmount.  A win would see us play in Connaught.  All support welcome.  

LGFA
U8 and U10 Football:
Our U8 and U10 continue to train and have fun Wednesday Evenings at 6.30pm.  If there are any parents who wish to help out any evening your help is more than welcome.

U14 Football:
Our U14 girls played Brigid’s this evening in the Division 1 Championship it was a tough game for our girls who fought hard.  Unfortunately Brigids came away victorious.

U16 Football:
Our U16 Football are playing minor and there is a challenge match organised for tomorrow evening in Lisnamult against St Ciaran’s at 7.30pm.  

Minor Football:
Our Minor Girls played their first round of the Championship against Four Roads last Thursday evening in Four Roads.  Our Minor girls were unlucky in their efforts in their Championship opener, a good performance in the second half was in vain as Four Roads got the better of them. Final Score Roscommon Gaels 3-5 Four Roads 4-6.  A Challenge match has been organised tomorrow evening at 7.30pm in Lisnamult against St. Ciarans.  

Junior Football:
Our game against Ballinameen that was to be played today has been pushed out to the 2nd of September by County Board.

Hurling
U12 Hurlers:
U12 boy’s played round 2 of their hurling league on Friday Evening against Padraig Pearses in Lisnamult.  The lads built on their previous performance and again played their hearts out.  After conceding 4 fortious goals in the first half the lads battled back to within 3 points, now they were in the ascendency and eventually ran out of time.  The panel was David King, Conor Mulry, Eoin Keavney, Hugh O’Connor, Odin Fallon, John McGuinness, Conor Grogan, Lochlainn Mulry, Brian Geraghty, Ciaran Mulry, Cathal Mulry and Harry King.

Football
U14 Football:
Well done to our U14 lads who defeated Clan na Gael in the Division 1 Championship by 1 point.  Final Score Roscommon Gaels 2-16 Clan na Gael 4-09.

U16 Football:
Pictured below is our U16 team who played St Ciaran’s today in Championship.  The lads put in a solid performance and deserved their victory of Roscommon Gaels 2-10 to St. Ciaran’s 0-5.  It was great to have nearly a full panel to pick from.  We have put ourselves in a great position with 3 wins from 3 games.  A big thanks to all the lads for their efforts today and we look forward to our remaining two games.

Junior Football:
Hard luck to our Junior Lads who had a tough game against Elphin last Friday evening.

Message from Roscommon Gaels Finance Committee
Tickets for the Development Draw have now been circulated among all members/families for sale. This is an essential fundraiser required for funding the day to day expenses associated with the running of the club and the fielding of 31 teams across all ages and codes.

Further fundraising options will need to be considered and approved by the club if this Draw is not fully supported including:

• Introducing an annual levy on all families/members to be paid at Registration Date.

• Membership of the weekly lotto. It only costs €2 per week to be a member of the lotto with an opportunity to win the jackpot - currently €10,000. (Consider joining the lotto today).

Return of unsold tickets is defeating the purpose of this fundraiser so if you do not sell the tickets allocated to you, then please consider buying the tickets yourself. Please promote the draw to friends and family members at home and abroad. Tickets can be purchased online via the club website. www.roscommongaels.ie 

Remember that the 123 people who are coaching your family members are volunteers and give their time freely.

Significant works have been undertaken by the Club which we can be very proud of which provide  excellent facilities for all our players but maintenance of the facilities and future development depends on members fully supporting fundraising events such as this Draw.

A small number of club members have devoted their time to arranging prizes for this Draw, circulating the tickets and selling tickets at recent GAA events in the town. New volunteers are always welcome... Your support is required. All the prizes have been generously donated by committed club members.

• The average annual running cost of the club is €98,000.
• The annual registration fees/membership fees that are collected from you annually are paid to Croke Park for Affiliation  and Insurance purposes with no financial benefit to the club whatsoever:
• The club is depending on weekly lotto sales and fundraisers such as this one to fund club activities.
• The lotto teams need new members to join in the weekly Saturday night lotto sales if we are to continue with this weekly fundraiser. (If it is discontinued then significant levies will need to be introduced for the club to fund its activities going forward.)

Camogie
U8’s:  Our U8’s played in a blitz last Monday evening in Lisnamult.  The girls had lots of fun, made new friends and played brilliantly.  Well done girls.  Training continues every Friday evening at 6.30pm  

U12’s:  
Our U12 Camogie girls were in action on Saturday Morning in a blitz in Oran.  Two Gaels teams participated and played with skill and determiniation which showed all they have learned since training started in February.  Well done girls.

Junior Camogie:  Since St Dominics pulled out of the Junior camogie championship we were left with no game to play last Tuesday.  Luckily we managed to arrange a challenge match against Sylane of Galway  so on Tuesday our team travelled down and got on very well.  This was an excellent, very entertaining game of camogie and the girls performed well.  The girls now turn their attention to the Junior championship again and play away to Padraig Pearses at 8pm on Tuesday evening 24th July in the final round robin game.  Mike Ryan is down to referee the game and all players should be at Pearses pitch by 7pm.  A win could secure a place in the county semi-final while a loss might mean a play-off date.

*There is a Camogie Club meeting on Friday Evening in Lisnamult at 8pm.
 
LGFA
U8 & U10’s:  Another great Challenge Match was enjoyed our young group of emerging stars last Wednesday Evening when our U8’s and U10’s had a challenge match against St. Brigid’s. It is great and encouraging to see all the kids improving weekly. Training continues Wednesday Evenings at 6.30pm.

U14:  Our U14’s had a busy week They played the first round of the Championship on Monday last playing Oran and won on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-4.  Our girls then played a second game of the championship on Friday evening away to Croans.  We were defeated on a scoreline of Roscommon Gaels 4-2 St Croan’s 4-10.  We are home to Brigid’s next Sunday Evening the 29th in Round 3 of the Championship.

U16:  U16’s are training Monday evening at 7.45pm in the Hyde.

Minor’s:-  The minor championship is due to start on Thursday 2nd of August  we are away to Four Roads 

Junior:   The next round of the championship is the 29th of July when we play Ballinameen.

*Roscommon Gaels Ladies Football meeting this Wednesday Evening 25th July at 9.30pm in The Hyde Centre can all managers and mentors please atteand.

HURLING

U12’s:  Our U12 boys had their first league match on Saturday in Rockfield v Oran.  The lads played really well in a competitive game and emerged victorious in the end.  There were great displays of skill all round.  The was was David King, Harry King, Conor Mulry, Cathal Mulry, Ciaran Mulry, Aaron Dolan, Odin Fallon, John McGuinness, Eoin Keavney, Hugh O’Connor, Bertie Satchwell, Brian Geraghty & Tom Beisty.

Senior’s Our senior Hurlers were beaten in the championship this evening against Four Roads.   Final score Four Roads 4-21 Roscommon Gaels 1-4.

Nursery
Our nursery is proving a great success under the stewardship of Seamie O’Neill which takes place every Thursday Evening at the Hyde.  In its first year these young future stars of our club are having a great time and a huge thanks goes to Seamie and his coaches.  Its the intention of the club to cover all codes in our nursery programme for 2019 and a meeting will take place in September to discuss this.

U9 & U10
Roscommon Gaels u9’s & u10’s played Aodh Ruadh GAA Club Ballyshannon in a challenge game in Lisnamult prior to Roscommon v Donegal game in the Hyde.
Everyone enjoyed the occasion and our lads played some great football.

U14 Football : Well done to our U14 lads who defeated Padraig Pearses Last Thursday evening in the Championship.  Div 1 Championship fixture vs Clann na nGael on Thursday evening 26th in Lisnamult at 8pm.

U16’s: U16’s won away to St Aidan’s this afternoon to secure our second win in the championship.  It was another great performance on a very warm day.  Due to a lot of players missing because of holidays and other sports, we only had 15 togged out.  We played some lovely football and showed great heart.  We inevitably tired in the second half and Aidans to their credit got back into the game and made it a nervy finish for us.  Our lads character shone through and we deserved our win in a game that was keenly contested.  A big thank you to all the lads who turned out today, especially our U14 duo, for their commitement and dedication to the team.  

Seniors: Our senior team played in the O’Rourke Cup today final score was St. Faithleach’s 4-15 Roscommon Gaels 2-11.

Camogie 
U8 & U10 Camogie:  Training continues as normal 6.30pm Friday evenings.  There is an U8 blitz tomorrow evening for our U8’s in Lisnamult at 6.30pm.  We had two U10 Camogie games last week.  On Thursday evening we travelled to Gurteen Co. Galway to take on Ballymacward Padraig Pearses.  They had a fantastic team of 10 year olds that train 2-3 times a week and there was a gulf in class.  That said we started the game with 5 girls that never played at this level before.  On Friday evening we had a home game against Sylane of Galway.  This was the 1st time that our girls got to use the new dressing rooms and they and Sylane were very impressed.  The game was played on the main pitch and all our girls were extremely eager to get playing so Sylane agreed to play a third 15 Minute half.  Inside the first 8 minutes of the game we were winning by 4-02 to 0-00.  The decision was made to give the less experienced girls playing time and keep the game competitive.  Fairplay to Sylane they didn’t give up and fought back to win by a point in the end.  We had 23 girls at the game and all of the girls got a lot of playing time.  The kind parents of our U10 panel provided sandwiches, buns and biscuits that were served to all that attended the game.  This was a good opportunity to repay the complement to Sylane who done the same for us last year.  The U10 coaches would like to thank the parents for bringing the refreshments and a big thank you to those that served teas, coffees, orange and treats to the kids.  We would also like to thank the lovely people of Sylane for travelling down and wish them all the best for the rest of the year.

​U13:  Our U13’s have their first game on Friday evening against Na Brid Oige venue tbc and time.

U14:  Our U14 girls face Oran this Wednesday in a semi final.  Details to be confirmed.

Junior Championship:  Our Junior Camogie team had its first win in the County Junior Championship on Tuesday when they beat Tulsk on a score line of 6:9 to 3:3.  Nineteen of our 23 strong panel were available to play and everyone got to participate in the game.  Our goals were scored by Niamh McCourt, Ella Killion, Ciara Crosbie, Nessa Madden, Eimear McCormack and Amy McNeill.  Tulsk provided difficult opposition but Etain Hession gave some great puck outs from the goal and the girls held a strong lineout for our team which dominated more and more as the game progressed.  Training continues Saturday morning in Lisnamult from 10am to 11.30am.  Next Tuesday 17th July we play a challenge match against Sylane of Galway at 8pm in Sylane pitch.  Assistance with lifts would be appreciated.  

LGFA
U8 & U10’s:  Training continues Wednesday evening in Lisnamult at 6.30pm.  

U12’s:  Our U12’s are taking a break for a couple of weeks.  We will be hosting and taking part in the Shield in the coming weeks.

U14: Well done to our girls who defeated Kilbride in the 3rd round of the Summer League last Monday evening.  We now sit at the top of our group finals to be played in August.  Our Championship kicks off tomorrow evening when we play Oran in the first round.  

U16:  U16’s are training Monday evening at 7.45pm in the Hyde.

Minor: Minor training Monday evenings from 7.45pm to 9pm.  Minor Championship is starting end of July.
 
Junior:   The next round of the championship is the 29th of July when we play Ballinameen.

Hurling
U10’s:  Our U-10 hurlers participated in the Padraig Pearses hosted blitz this morning.   Although the first signs of a change of weather were evident our young boys played with great heart , determination and plenty of skill . They enjoyed 3 games and acquitted themselves very well in all

U16’s: Our U16 boys had a great win today against Strokestown 3-9 to 3-8.  It was a very close game that swung both ways but our lads showed tremendous courage and skill to win by a point, having played the last 20mins with 14 men.  A huge thanks to all the lads, especially the U14’s who helped us greatly.  We were well down in numbers due to holidays, gaeltacht etc but the lads rallied and put in a huge performance for a well deserved win.

Message from Roscommon Gaels Chairperson

July 2018

The 2018 GAA year is half way through and has been a hectic but most enjoyable season so far. A lot of work has been put in both on and off the pitch with some huge events and memorable moments happening at all levels in the club.

Teams, Coaching & Education
The pitches have been filled with all codes and age groups playing and training in Lisnamult over the past few months. We have gone from our pitches being closed in March and April due to flooding to our pitches being scorched brown with the high temperatures and a water ban in place. God bless Irish weather!!! Most teams have completed their leagues and are in currently playing in their championships from Senior and Junior and in the underage. Huge congratulations to the U14 boys on doing the double in their football league and hurling championship, the u12 girls on their victory in the football championship final. Both sets of players have worked hard with their mentors in great numbers, in all weathers and their achievements are something the club should be very proud of. Well done to the u17 hurlers on reaching the Co. Championship final, the U16 lads on getting to the co league football final and the u14 girls on getting to their league football final. Victory eluded the latter groups but it was excellent achievement to get to the finals.

The u8s and U10s are all playing at their various blitzes and matches and are participating to a high level. The inaugural nursery football programme is getting great numbers and is being well received by the youngest players in our club and their families.

25 plus u12 camogie players travelled to Croke Park in April for the “Caman to Croker” event. All the girls got to play matches on the hallowed turf against teams from all over Ireland. It was a wonderful day out for players, for the parents who travelled and for the mentors. Well done to all involved.

The adult teams are all participating in their leagues and championships at the moment. The senior footballers have won one and lost one championship match, the junior ladies footballers have drawn and lost one championship match and the senior hurlers and junior camogie teams have played 2 championship games but sadly despite their best efforts have not won either of them. The numbers playing at adult level in the club are probably not what they should be for a club our size. It can be difficult to field at times with players emigrating either permanently or for the summer, work commitments or loss of interest. It is something our club will have to examine and act upon in the near future. However great work is being done with those who are committed and we acknowledge that it can be very difficult to keep momentum going during the summer period. We want to salute and thank all the players and their managements for the time and effort they are putting in to coaching and playing for our club. Well done to all club panels and their dedicated mentors on the work done thus far.

A number of coaches and committee members attended the Child Protection & safe guarding & GDPR training courses which were held in the Hyde centre and the COE in Bekan, Ballyhaunis. Thanks to all who organized and attended these courses on behalf of Ros Gaels.

The club mentoring goals have been progressed and more work will be done in the early Autumn, at the end of the holiday season, to achieve these goals. Many thanks to John Donnellan and the coaching committee on their work to date on this important project.

Thanks also to those who assisted with the participation of our underage players in the Easter Parade who flew our Gaels flag and wore our colours proudly on the day.

Committees
Meetings are a necessary part of club planning, organising and decision making so thanks to all those who attend the meetings and actively participate to make the club as productive and democratic as possible. It is imperative that people attend meetings when they are called as we are a big club and it is a necessary part of the mechanics of the club. The number of meetings is kept to a minimum but they are an integral part of the process by which our club is run. Your opinions and suggestions are important to us so please come to the meetings so your voice can be heard.

Thanks to all our various club committee members for the time and energy they give to the administration of the club both within and externally with the various Co Boards and co committees.

Development of Lisnamult Grounds & new dressing rooms
The development of our new dressing room facilities in Lisnamult is finally complete. The building is a joy to use and a much welcome addition to our club. These new facilities of four large dressing rooms with showers and toilets, a referee’s room along with a kitchen / shop area, a public toilet block and a sports wall are a huge step in the right direction for this phase in the development of our club. It has been a long process but the final building is most definitely worth it. The cost of the new clubhouse project is in the region of €360,000 and our goal is was to have it fully completed and operational by the beginning of the summer in time for the national feile camogie & hurling competition and this goal was achieved.

For those of you who have used them in the past month since opening you will agree that they are state of the art, are spacious, clean, comfortable, environmentally sustainable and offer top quality changing, catering and sanitary facilities to all players, supporters and to anyone using the facilities. It is something to be very, very proud of and has greatly enhanced our playing facilities in Lisnamult. We will have an official opening of the dressing rooms towards the end of the summer with a weekend of activities which will be planned around this opening.

Other works that have been carried out in Lisnamult include the replacement of the ball stopping nets on the main pitch and maintenance works were carried out on all pitches in the
past few weeks. The front training pitch still requires work and all the goal posts are to be painted and get new nets or repair existing ones in the next few days.

Club Presentation Night
We had a lovely club awards night in Carthys in April. It was a most enjoyable night and it was great to welcome back the 1992 Junior hurling champions and their mentors. Tom Doolan was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame and he was one of the selectors on this team. There was great craic and banter on the night especially from Decie Hoare, who as usual, did a brilliant job as MC for the night. Well done to all our deserving winners for 2017 who received their awards on the night. Thanks to all who helped organise and run this annual event.

Feile Hurling & Camogie 2018
One of the highlights of the year so far was the hosting of the national Feile na nGael hurling and camogie finals on the 8th-10th June 2018. A huge amount of work went into the preparations to welcome our visiting camogie teams from St. Mullins of Carlow and Fermanagh and the hurlers from Ennistymon in Clare. We were one of the few clubs in Feile 2018 to host three teams.

The hard working Feile committee of Tom O Farrell, Tricia Torpey, Una Ní Chuinn, Bernie Mulry, Yvonne Lambe, Noel Fallon, Orla Fleming, Niamh Kilmartin, Sinead Killeen and Teresa Hession worked tirelessly for months to get host families, sort Garda vetting, fund raise for Feile hosting, get sponsors, organise the pitches and the logistics of all the matches, food, entertainment, presentations, communications around the event etc etc. As well as that there were three Gaels teams to be trained to take part in the competition. It was a massive undertaking but it was done in a very organised manner and no stone was left unturned to ensure it was as efficient and as enjoyable as possible.

In the run up to Feile there were a few fundraising events – an 80s disco in O’Garas “Nancys Bar”, a fun run from Hannons Hotel and a cake sale from Gleesons shop in the Square. Thanks to the businesses above for their help and sponsorship in the running of these events. Many parents and players got involved and supported these fundraisers so a huge thanks to all who organised and ran them. Thanks also to Mulrys Peppermill restaurant, Seamus Carthy REA auctioneers, Shane & Orla Fleming Supervalu and Liam Mc Neill foodstore for their sponsorship of tops, socks and togs and food for the Feile.

On the pitch there were group games on Friday evening and Saturday morning when our three Feile teams played three matches each in Tremane, Hyde, Lisnamult and Tulsk in both hurling and camogie. We provided meals, refreshments and entertainment for our visiting clubs players and their families and mentors on both Friday and Saturday night.

On Saturday our club hosted 8 clubs from all over the country in our pitches in Lisnamult for their quarter finals. These matches required meticulous logistics and organisation and our club provided top quality pitches and our new dressing rooms, match officials, car parking and refreshments for these 8 visiting clubs. Well done and massive thanks to all the people in the club who assisted in making this part of Feile run smoothly and without a hitch.

Sunday saw the older u14 camogie team play in the shield All Ireland semi final in Kiltoom and they were narrowly defeated by a team from Wicklow after a tough and hard fought battle. They gave it all they had on the day but just fell short of victory. Our Feile hurlers won their semi final in a cracking game of hurling v Pearses of Galway in Kiltormer and they then travelled to Ballinasloe to take on Clara /Brosna Gaels of Offaly in the All Ireland Division 7 final. Clara were the overwhelming favourites for this game as they had comprehensively beaten every team on their path to the final. Sadly a goal in the dying seconds of the game saw our brave hurlers lose by a solitary point in very controversial circumstances in what was a tremendous hurling match. It was a heart breaking loss for all involved and all the Gaels supporters who travelled to Ballinasloe to shout on the lads in the final.

It was a wonderful weekend of sport, fun, comradery and friendships and it epitomised all that is good about the GAA. Our club did an outstanding job welcoming and hosting all the visiting clubs from other counties and we should be very proud of how well it was run and received by all involved over the Feile weekend. Well done and massive thanks to the Feile committee, the underage club and members of the senior club for their assistance in the organisation and running of Feile. It will be remembered fondly by all who were lucky enough to have been involved in it.

Connacht Final in Hyde
After Roscommon earned their place in the senior Connacht football final and the game was forced to be played, by right, in the Hyde there was a huge amount of work to be done to get the stadium match ready. A group of very hard working people, including our some of our minor players who helped give the front of the Hyde a painted facelift, put in a lot of hours of preparation and work to meet the standards imposed by the GAA, H&S, HSE, the Gardai etc and to ensure that Ros Gaels involvement in the running of the provincial final went smoothly and contributed to a great day out for patrons. On the day Ros Gaels had approximately 60 volunteers working in the Hyde running the shops, selling programmes, looking after the press and referees refreshments and other jobs that are a necessary part of running such a huge event. I would like to thank every single person who assisted and helped on the weeks leading up to it and over the weekend of the match. Your contribution to our club by your help in the Hyde around big match days is greatly valued and does not go unnoticed.

Now that Roscommon have made the super 8s section of the All Ireland senior football series we will have Donegal at home on the Saturday the 21st July at 5pm. We will be coming again seeking help with the above activities on the weekend of the game and we know you will not be found wanting again.

Club Rossie Tickets
Thanks to all those who sold and bought Club Rossie tickets to support our county teams in all codes and age groups. All clubs in Roscommon have a quota to sell to support the running of our teams and there are many Gaels players on Co teams in ladies football, camogie, hurling and football across the age groups from U14 to Senior. We have met our quota of CR sales so thanks again to all who assisted with that.

Finance
All of the club infrastructure, maintenance as well as loan repayments on our fabulous facilities in Lisnamult, equipment, refreshments, physio etc and general club running costs/ bills costs money. It takes between €95,000 -€100,000 to run Roscommon Gaels club annually. The membership fees are received in Feb are paid out in Feb – May to the various Co Boards of the GAA, LGFA & Camogie to register members, affiliate and insure teams so none of this income goes into the finances to run the club.

Our sources of income are the club lotto, the shops and programmes in Hyde and Lisnamult and our various fundraisers. It is an area that can’t be ignored and left to a few people to raise and look after. So with that in mind we are encouraging everyone in the club to do their bit to assist with the raising of finances to fund all aspects of our club that we all get so much from.

Tickets have been distributed to all players, members and families in the club for our annual club draw which was deferred from last Christmas to this summer. The draw takes place on the 11th of August. We will are asking everyone who has received a book of 6 tickets to sell all these tickets and return them back to the club via teams, executive or the finance committee asap. There are a fantastic array of prizes on offer and we are really grateful to our sponsors who have donated again so generously.

If you have sold all your tickets already please return them and sell more if possible. There will also be tickets sold at major events that are coming up in the next few weeks and your help will be required with this. If approached to assist please do so as every little bit helps. It is a huge task to fund our club so we are appealing to everyone to do their bit and contribute to this fund raiser so our club can continue provide and improve the facilities, equipment etc that is on offer to all our members, the community, schools etc.

Help is also needed with the weekly selling of the club lotto tickets which is a huge part of our income to meet the day to day running costs of Roscommon Gaels. We encourage all or members to join and sell the club lotto which has a jackpot of €10,000.

Finally help will be required on Saturday next with the shops and programmes in the Hyde for the Roscommon v Donegal game. If you can give us a hand with this please let us know and the more help we have the better.

U8 & U10 Camogie: Training continues as normal 6.30pm Friday evenings.

U12: Our U12 girls attended a blitz in Four Roads Saturday Morning. Well done to the girls who played Four Roads, Oran and St. Dominics.

U14: Our U14 girls defeated Tulsk on Wednesday in the 3rd round of the League.

Junior Championship: Our Junior camogie team took on Four Roads in the second round of the Junior Championship on Tuesday evening in glorious sunshine at Lisnamult. After welcoming Four Roads to our new dressing rooms it was down to business and while the outcome of this match was never in doubt, Four Roads had to fight hard for every score they got. Many of the Four Roads team have secured numerous county senior medals over the last decade and therefore had lots of experience and wisdom coming into this game. Our Gaels gals, the majority of whom are minor did our Club proud and battled for every minute of this 60 minute game. Lisa Mullen, Emily Horan and Riesse Donlon were stalwart in defence while Colleen Kelly and Amy McNeill kept the pressure on up front. Ella Killion was scorer of our three points while Niamh McCourt blasted to the net for our only goal. This was another enjoyable game which follows on the heels of the great game we had last week against Oran. Both games displayed the huge potential in the Gaels for a strong adult camogie team in future years. Our next game is away to Tulsk at 7.15pm next Tuesday evening and your support would be appreciated.

Roscommon U14 hurling development squad are taking part in their second Provincial blitz on this Friday evening June 29th in the Connacht COE. The lads have three games against Leitrim, Sligo and Mayo and their first game is 6.45pm.

1. Roscommon GAA Kellogg’s Cup Camps 2018
1. The annual Roscommon GAA Kellogg’s Cul camp takes place at fifteen different venues during July from Monday to Friday each week from 10am to 2.30pm daily for boys and girls aged between 6 &13 years. Each child who attends the camp will receive a Jersey, half-zip training top and backpack. Cost of the camp is 60 Euro per child, 110 Euro for two, 150 for three, and 40 euro per child thereafter.  Booking can be done online at kelloggsculcamps.ie or at Roscommon GAA Offices, Racecourse Road. U14:  Our U14 girls played Oran on Wednesday in the 2nd round of the League.  Next Wednesday 4th of July we are away to Tulsk in the 3rd round of the League.

Junior Championship:  Unfortunately our junior girls were defeated by Oran in the 1st round of the championship on Tuesday Last.  Next up our Juniors take on Four Roads in the 2nd round of the Championship on 3rd of July at 8pm.

Community Games:  Unfortunately our girls were narrowly defeated by Four Roads Last Sunday Week in the Community Games.

Hurling
U14:  We lost to Padraig Pearses by 5-2 to 2-7 in an exciting match in the county league last Wednesday in sweltering conditions at Lisnamult. This was our first time to use the excellent new dressing-rooms, and despite the result it was a great experience. We will take a break from training until August and we wish everyone an action-packed, enjoyable and safe summer. .  

Senior Hurlers:  Hard Luck to our Senior Hurlers who were defeated by St Dominic's in the first round of the Championship. Final Score Roscommon Gaels 0-10 St Dominic's 2-14.

Congrats to Eoin Kiernan who came 2nd and Finn Killion who came 3rd in the County final of the u16 poc fada held in Roscommon racecourse on Tuesday Last.  Well done lads.

LGFA
U8 & U10’s:  Training continues every Wednesday evening 6.30-7.30pm. We had a challenge match on Wednesday in Kiltoom for our U8’s and U10’s against St Brigids.  All the girls enjoyed the games.

U12’s:  Our U12’s are taking a break for a couple of weeks.  We will be hosting and taking part in the Shield in the coming weeks.

U14: Well done to our girls who played Croans in the first round of the Summer League last Monday evening.  Next round in we play Four Roads.

U16:  U16’s are back training Wednesday Evening from 7.45pm to 9pm.

Minor: Anthony McCormack has started minor training Wednesday evenings from 7.45pm to 9pm.  Minor Championship is starting end of July.
 
Junior:   First Round of the championship ended in a well earned draw tonight for our Junior Ladies Gaelic Football team. Plenty of smiles so as good as a win for us.  Final Score 3-7 each.

Football
Junior:  The lads were our against Faithleach’s in the League last Sunday week.  The same problem with the Junior Ladies the lads are finding it difficult to field a team.  Lucky enough we had some support on the sideline who were able to tog out.  Unfortunately Faithleach’s got the better of us.  Final Score Roscommon Gaels 3-8 Faithleach’s 2-16.

Senior:  Our Senior lads had a comfortable win over St Croans in the League last Saturday Week.  Final Score Roscommon Gaels 3-15 St Croans 1-4.

Our Annual Development Draw was launched on 16th June with the draw taking place on 11th August.  The Development draw has been moved from the customary Christmas time Draw back to the summer time, a time when all our members are using and availing of our Club facilities at Lisnamult.
