Round 4 of the U17 Championship saw Roscommon Gaels continue their winning ways with a high scoring win over a very determined Western Gaels team. Western Gaels playing against a sizeable wind won the throw in and with their first attack pointed from their forward dashing wing back. From the kick out the home side signalled their intent with an excellently worked point by John McGuinness to equal matters. From this attack our lads got a foothold early and further points from Rory Carthy (45m), Liam Naughten and a brace from John McGuinness gave us a 0-05 to 0-01 lead after the 1st quarter. The Westies responded with a 2nd point from the midfielder before McGuinness added two more to his tally with excellently executed scores. Our lads continued to dominate using the wind to full advantage to race into a 0-15 to 0-04 lead coming up to half time. Scores by the excellent Zawyal Khan (putting in a man of the match display), John McGuinness, Rory Carthy and Jack Raftery building this lead. However, the Western Gaels lads battled bravely and a speculative shot for a point dropped short catching out our keeper to land in the net for a Goal and this gave them a lifeline at half time with the score at 0-16 to 1-04.
Now with the wind, the away team had 3 attacks but only came away with one point from their excellent midfielder. Despite playing against the wind, we then responded with 1-02 with the goal coming from Liam Naughten after an excellent drive from Ciaran Reilly. Still, Western Gaels kept to the task and responded with 1-03, their Goal been scored after our defence failed to deal with a high ball. Indeed, up to the last 4 minutes of the 2nd half the away team were leading this half by 1.05 to 1.03 which showed great character by them. The Gaels did finish strong with 2 Rory Carthy Frees and a John McGuiness point to leave the final score at 1-22 to 2-09. There were many positives from tonight again particularly the first half display in scoring 0-16. Notable performances from Zawie Khan, John McGuinness and Eoghan Carthy, however concerns over the number of turnovers and the easy concession of two goals will give us plenty to work on ahead of the business end of the season. It is now 4 from 4 and a guaranteed semi-final has us in a good place with plenty of work to do. We are where we want to be so well done to all concerned. On Sunday August 28th Mark Kelly Electrical Contractor sponsored Roscommon Gaels Ladies Football team played Kilbride in the Under 14 Div 2A County Final in Mulhern Park. The game didn't go as planned for the Gaels girls, however, they never gave up. Early goals in the game put the girls on the back foot and with Kilbride's strong defence, scores were hard to come by in the first half with Kilbride 3-03 to Roscommon Gaels 0-01at half time. The second half of the game played out different with the Gaels team fighting back to win the half scoring 1-02. But it wasn't enough to get them over the line. The final score finished up at 3-03 to 1-03. Congratulations to Kilbride and well done to the Roscommon Gaels girls who never let their heads drop and fought hard. Roscommon Gaels GAA Club wish to extend it's congratulations to Clubman and Coach Kevin McStay on his appointment as Manager of the Mayo County Senior Football Team. Of course we are saddened to see Kevin leave us for the 4 year term of his appointment, we look forward to meeting him on the opposite side of the line when our own Rossies meet Mayo.
Kevin, originally from Ballina, has a long association with Roscommon Gaels since his move to Roscommon in the early 1990's, both as a player winning a county title in 1994, captaining them in 1998, and, as a coach bringing our senior footballers to win a Championship title in 2004. In 2021 he returned to coaching in the club bringing our Minor Footballers to win a Championship title. He is currently manager of our Minor Footballers and we hope that his success will continue in-house before venturing further afield. Best of Luck Kevin. The Ladies U14 Mark Kelly Electrical Contractor sponsored Division 2 Football team have qualified for the County Final which takes place on Sunday the 28th of August at 6.00pm in Mulhern Park Fuerty against Kilbride. The girls route to the final started back on the July 17th with a defeat to Kilbride in the 1st round before wins over St. Brigids & Shannon Gaels gave the team a home quarter final against Castlerea St Kevin’s which was won comprehensively on a score line of 5-06 to 1-02. The Semi Final took place on Sunday August 14th against St. Barrys in Tarmonbarry in what was an end to end game with the lead swapping on several occasions. Roscommon Gaels Grace Campbell popped up for a last minute goal to seal our place in Sunday’s County Final. We urge everyone to come along and support the girls in your club colours next Sunday evening in Mulhern Park in what is sure to be a tough game against our nearest neighbours. Congratulations to Club Member and Chairperson of the club's Hurling Board on winning the Club Lotto Jackpot of €5,400 on Sunday July 31st. Congratulations also goes to John Corocoran who won the Jackpot the following week. We hope to get a picture of John receiving his prize soon.
