To all our Club Members and their families,
Our club, Roscommon Gaels GAA was founded in 1959 when the two GAA clubs in Roscommon town amalgamated to form what we know now as Roscommon Gaels. As part of our 60th anniversary celebrations we are officially opening of our GAA facilities in Lisnamult with a set of events over the June bank holiday weekend. After years and years of planning and fundraising by the various committees in Roscommon Gaels we have purchased, developed and built pitches, floodlights, a sports wall and dressing room facilities that we should be very, very proud of and we should all be there to mark the opening of them. These facilities are there for current and future generations of Roscommon Gaels, the local schools and our community and they should be celebrated and never taken for granted. We want all of our club to be together in our home ground of Lisnamult at the official opening. Our GAA club is all about belonging, fostering a common sense of identity, pride in where we are from and the club we play for, being together, celebrating our achievements and successes and have fun together. There is something for all members to participate in and to mark this very important milestone in our clubs history and development. We are looking forward to seeing all members of Roscommon Gaels at the official opening by our club President and a founding member Mr. Barry Molloy. Camogie U14 camogie This week Roscommon Gaels faced Padraig Pearses in Lisnamult in the third round of the 2019 league. The Gaels were beaten by Pearses in the Championship by one point on a cold, wet evening in early April. The defeat was sore and the girls were not going to let that happen again. The team lined out on a sunny evening in Lisnamult and the scores started to flow. The magic was back!. Scores from Zara Fallon, Ava Mulry, Gwen Killion and Anna Kiernan gave the Gaels a 3:3 to 0:1 lead at half time. Molly Finneran in goals together with the back line kept any of the Pearses attacks at bay not letting them dominate at all in this space. In the second half the scores continued and Alannah Sutton, Grace O Gara, Ellen Dolan and Grace Geraghty added to the scoreline. Several subs were brought on and these girls added greatly to the game. The final score was 6:7 to 1:2. Roscommon Gaels maintain their joint leadership of the League table at the moment. Roscommon Gaels face St. Domnicks on Monday next 27th May at 7.30 pm for the fourth round of the league. Féile Skills The County féile skills competition took place in Lisnamult on 19th May and the Gaels were represented by Ava Mulry and Gwen Killion. The winner was Andrea Fallon who goes on to represent the County on June 22nd in Abbotstown. Our boys now look forward to displaying those skills at the 60th Celebrations next weekend. Training continues on Mondays @ 6.30 pm Hurling U10 Hurling Our U-10 s had a very enjoyable evening last Monday when Southern Gaels from Athlone came to Lisnamult for two challenge games . We played an U-9 and U-10 game . While winning both games with every player getting plenty of game time the most enjoyable aspect was to see the level of skill on display from our lads . It really showed the benefits to be had from our well organized training sessions . LGFA U14 Ladies Football Our U14 Ladies are in a DIVISION 1 - SEMI-FINAL On Mon 3rd June @7pm Roscommon Gaels (H) v Oran. Roscommon Gaels Hall of Fame 2018 Oliver Mc Guinness Snr Oliver was born in 1938 and lived at Main Street, Roscommon. He played football at all levels for St Coman’s from Juvenile up to Senior with considerable success and it was acknowledged by people involved at the time that Oliver was a very skillful and talented player and that he would go on to have a successful football career. He progressed to the St Coman’s senior team and when the new Gaels were formed in 1959 following the amalgamation of Eoghan Ruadh’s and St Coman’s, Oliver played a prominent part in the Roscommon Gaels senior football team. In 1959 the senior team were defeated by St Brigid’s in the County semi-final and Oliver played at corner forward at the age of 21. Then senior footballers lost at semi-final stage in 1960 and 1961. In 1962 the senior footballers began their campaign with a 1-8 to 1-5 win against Shannon Gaels. The County final in 1962 was not played until 1963 as Roscommon qualified for the All Ireland senior football final. At Athleague in July 1963 Roscommon Gaels defeated St Brigids by 1-11 to 1-10 and Oliver McGuinness played a prominent role in the victory. Oliver moved from Roscommon in 1963/64 for career purposes but continued to maintain a keen interest in the Gaels. A truly great Gaels family. Well done Oliver. Football U9 Football Our U9 Football group had their first go games blitz on Saturday 25th. Hosted by St Aidans in Ballyforan we competed with St. Aidans and St Ciarans over 3 games. Camogie U14 Camogie The U14 camogie league competition continued this week when Roscommon Gaels travelled to Four Roads for the second round. The evening was calm and cool similar to the players but they took to the field with fire in their belly. The game started with scores from Roscommon from play and also from accurate free taking and the half time whistle blew with Roscommon Gaels 3:3 Four Roads 0:0. We couldn’t believe it, this was the Four Roads team that had secured their place in féile and we were matching them and beating them. The girls were electric during the half time talk and each one encouraging the other and heard to say ‘now we can’t lie back this is four roads and they will come back at us’. They were taking nothing for granted and as a team decided to start the second half as if they were starting the game again, the lead was incidental to them at this point. The second half began with a mid field battle for ball and Four Roads scored a point. The girls decided they were not having this and regained possession and matched the point. The Gaels rattled in a further 3 goals and 4 points with a final score of 6:8 to 0:1. To say the crowd went wild is an understatement. The joy on the girls faces and their chitter chatter coming off the pitch is what mentors live for. Scorers on the day were Ava Mulry, Zara Fallon, Molly Finneran, Anna Kiernan, Gwen Killion, Grace O’ Gara, Emma Hough, Alannah Sutton. This win puts Roscommon Gaels joint leaders on the league board and the next match is at home to Pearses on Tuesday 21st May 2019 at 7pm. Minor / Junior and U16 camogie training will continue on Thursday in Lisnamult from 6.30pm to 8pm. LGFA U12 Football The u12 girls returned to form on Sunday evening when they took on a very tough and skillful Castlerea team. The girls played some outstanding football in front of a very large crowd of supporters. The girls fought hard throughout the game with everyone playing a vital role and came away with a three score win. Well done to the girls! Their focus now turns to Sunday evening next 26th of May, when they take on Eire Óg in Lisnamult at 6pm in round 4 of the Summer League. We would like to thank the parents for their continued support of the girls each week. Training continues Wednesday evening in Lisnamult at 6:30pm. Dear Parent/Guardian As you are aware Friday 28th to Sunday 30th June Roscommon Gaels will host three visiting Féile teams. (One) u-14 Boys football team and (Two) u-14 ladies football teams. This is a wonderful opportunity for our club and our community. To make it a success for our club and the visiting teams, we need to raise funds to cover the cost of our Féile weekend and we need your help. We are having a 80’s, 90’s Disco Friday 24th May in Nancy’s Late night venue. We are looking at 2 tickets (€10 per ticket) per household and we'd really appreciate if parents would purchase tickets either through a committee member or purchase on the night. We want this to be a great social night., One event if supported, will be suffice. We look forward to creating a successful Féile 2019 and only with your help we can accomplish such. Please support. Thanking you, Roscommon Gaels Féile Committee: Finbar Reilly, Michelle Hughes Walsh, Úna Ní Chuinn, Declan Walsh AH, the 1980s!
Perms, stonewashed denim jackets and leg warmers were the height of fashion, Stock, Aiken and Waterman soundtracked our lives, teenage girls swooned over Tom Cruise in Top Gun and boys dreamt of Kim Basinger. May God have mercy on our souls. Anyway, you can relive the retina-scorching fashions and synth-heavy pop ‘choons’ at a special fundraising 80s disco in Nancy's Friday 24th May Night in aid of Roscommon Gaels Feile. This disco is to fundraise for the upcoming Feile which we will be hosting in June. Doors open at 9pm with an entry fee of €10. Camogie U14 Camogie The U14 camogie team began their league campaign on Tuesday 7th May with a match against Oran (the County A Champions). This turned out to be a cracker of a game with the Roscommon Gaels girls on fire and playing the best camogie of the year. It was a free flowing match displaying all the skills of camogie and the two teams battled it out with Oran going in at half time a point up. The Gaels girls took confidence from their first half performance and rattled through the next 25 minutes hardly making a mistake. Emma Hough scored a point from play to level the game and the mentors on the side line had to be contained. The crowd rallied behind them and the girls fought to the end. The Gaels were delighted with a draw against Oran who are the best U14 squad in the County. It goes to show that on any given day we can match up to the best and be counted. The team were deservedly delighted with their performance and they now proceed to the next game against Four Roads in four roads on Tuesday next 14th May 2019. Training continues on Saturday 10.30 to 12. Come and support this team you won’t be disappointed. Minor / Junior and U16 camogie training will continue on Thursday in Lisnamult from 6.30pm to 8pm. Hurling U10 Hurling Many thanks to all who attended and supported our U8 & U10 hurling blitz on Saturday morning in Lisnamult. U12 Football Well done to our U12’s girls this evening. We played Clann na nGael in Lisnamult. The team fought had and competed all they way until the final whistle. The score board did not go our way today but our team spirit is getting stronger. We will improve, we will compete fiercely when we meet Castlrea. Training continues Wednesday evening. U14 Football On Thursday evening our girls travelled to Kiltoom for our 3rd round of the league v St Brigids. We knew going into the game that this was going to be probably the toughest game in our group. It was a Smashing game of football with all skills on display, the lead changing hands once. Roscommon Gaels played a super first half but we spurned a few good goal chances that would have given us a deserved lead at the break and, instead, we trailed by four. We quickly regained the lead after the break and raced ahead by two only to take our foot off the gas and Brigid’s fought their way back, a very late goal giving them a lead we had no time to overcome. There was a great Roscommon Gaels crowd at the game and we were all very disappointed for our team, convinced we should have taken it. Of course we can only congratulate Brigid’s who never lay down. Final Score Roscommon Gaels 6-06 St Brigid’s 5-11. Panel: Caitlin Hannon, Eve McNeill, Emma O’Farrell, Kate Harlow, Ciara Killeen, Sarah Purcell, Emma Hough, Alanna Sutton, Carole Green, Jenny Morris, Ava Mulry 3-0, Zara Fallon, Grace Dwyer 0-1, Shauna Walsh 2-04, Moll Finneran 1-0. Our next game in the Div 1 League is v Pearses on Thursday in Lisnamult. Football U14 Football Roscommon Gaels 5-05 Boyle 2-11 Bank holiday monday 6th june we travelled to boyle to play which we knew was going to be tough to win. Win/Draw the game we were in the semi final - lose it & we were in a 3 way playoff to get to the semi finals. We started off great - we controlled the ball & it was quick into john mcguinness who won everything. 3-04 to 0-02 half time in which we play exceptional well but we knew come the 2nd half boyle would come out strong and the did. They tore into us and we couldn't get the ball past the half way line and eventually they got in the lead. But our heads didnt' drop and we scored 2 goals in the space of a few mins to get back into the lead & we held on a Great battle in the end. Now we play St Dominics in the Semi final on Thurs 16th May in Knockcroghery @7pm.
