ROSCOMMON GAELS 1-19 ATHLEAGUE 0-8
Roscommon Gaels emerged as worthy winners in this years Junior Hurling final played in atrocious weather conditions in Lisnamult last Sunday evening. On a day in which it rained from early morning, credit must go to Roscommon Gaels Club for working hard to ensure the pitch was playable. The big question was which team would cope with the conditions the best. Early on it was Athleague playing with a stiff breeze that started the stronger. They will regret missing a few early frees having had the lions share of the possession and after 10 mins the scores were level at 0-2 each. The Gaels had now settled and with the full back line on top started to control proceedings. Finn Killion was deadly accurate from frees and Dillon Hanley was proving a handful for the Athleague rear guard picking off two lovely scores from play. Despite playing against the breeze the Gaels led 0-10 to 0-6 at half time. Athleague again started the second half on top and a brilliant save from Brendan Quinn kept them at bay. The Gaels drove on from this timely save and started to pull clear. Well taken points from Richard Walsh, Ryan Conlon and Finn Killion help the Gaels into a 0-19 to 0-8 lead with minutes remaining. The only goal of the game came in injury time when DJ Hession finished the ball to the net following a good Gaels move. On a day not suited to free flowing hurling Roscommon Gaels were excellent and Finn Killion emerged deservedly with the Man of the Match award. After referee Aaron Clogher brought proceeding to an end, a very sporting Athleague team remained on the pitch in the down pouring rain as Captain Tim Gilmore lifted the cup for Roscommon Gaels. SCORERS: Ros Gaels – B. Quinn 0-1(F), DJ Hession 1-0, F. Killion 0-10 (8F), R. Walsh 0-4, D. Hanley 0-2, R. Conlon 0-2. Athleague – N. Coyle 0-1, C. Kelly 0-5 (5F), J. Crehan 0-1, T. Connaughton 0-1
